“Rock Star” is a portrait of my son, a talented guitarist. The saturated colors against a black background are meant to evoke a nightclub atmosphere. My family members are used to me taking pictures of them and interpreting their images into fiber art. Although my designs are often inspired by photographs, I do not use direct transfers or photo-printed fabric in my work. I prefer to cut and layer individual pieces of colored fabric to create the composition. Additional details such as the strings and reflections on the guitar strap button were “drawn” with hand-guided machine stitching

I don’t have very many (good) photos of myself –I’m much more comfortable behind the

camera than in front of it. This portrait is a pretty accurate picture of me and how I interact with the world.

Sometimes I wonder if the camera serves as a creative tool allowing me to express my true self, or is it something I hide behind? Although my designs are often inspired by photographs, I do not use direct transfers or photo-printed fabric in my fiber artwork.

I cut and layer individual pieces of colored fabric to create the composition. Additional details such as the text on the camera lens and the reflections on the fingernails were “drawn” with hand-guided machine stitching
