This original design was inspired by an autumn walk in the woods on Ragged Mountain in Southington, CT. The air and the falling leaves were both crisp. I stopped for a while, to watch the warm sunlight streaming down through the trees and to my surprise, I was joined by the last Monarch Butterfly of the year. The flowing curves in the background were machine pieced and machine quilted with silk thread. The butterfly was completely hand stitched using the MOLA technique. Layers of fabric are carefully cut to reveal the colors beneath the surface. The Monarch was hand appliqued to the piece with wings fully spread to capture that single moment when time can become still.

Fabrics: cotton, silk, satin, velour
Hand-stitched MOLA technique, hand applique, embroidery, machine-pieced, machine- quilted.
